This is the dramatic moment a lion woke up from his afternoon nap, giving onlookers a rare chance to see deep inside his mouth. Wildlife photographers Andy and Sarah Skinner waited three days for the perfect moment at the Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana.
They had been tracking a group of three lions and found them resting in the shade, before one male started to rise not long before sunset. Mr Skinner said he was delighted to capture ‘the intricate detail and textures of the lion’s mouth and of course his impressive canines’.
The couple from Berkshire, who are both 41 and have been married for 13 years, are used to staking out animals and host safari tours.
Mrs Skinner said of lions: ‘They have such a coarse tongue to take the skin off their prey and this picture shows that brilliantly.
‘You also get a good look at his teeth which, for a lion of about eight or nine years old, is a set which are in pretty good shape.’
