Photo:Couple Gave Up Their Lucrative Advertising Jobs To Travel and Clean Toilets

This South African couple quit their jobs in advertising to see how far they could travel together. When people travel, they often share stories of parties on beaches, exotic food and 'finding themselves' by doing yoga on top of a mountain.
Chanel Cartell and Stevo Dirnberger, from their Instagram feed, seem to be having the time of their lives together.

However, they've recently shared the uglier side of their travels on their blog. Chantel Cartell said: "So far, I think we’ve tallied 135 toilets scrubbed, 250 kilos of cow dung spread, 2 tons of rocks shovelled, 60 metres of pathway laid, 57 beds made, and I cannot even remember how many wine glasses we’ve polished."
Their goal was to see how far from home they could travel before they ran out of money and resources. Money's been so tight recently that they have had to only buy "the smallest amount of food" and their only luxury is dental floss.
The couple understood that their social media posts don't show the reality of the situation - just the beautiful landscapes and not the troubles they've faced along the way.
They've been working with company workaway, which pairs travellers with hosts in different countries who are willing to give bed and board in return for odd jobs.
And the hard work is taking its toll. She wrote: I am not at my fittest, slimmest or physically healthiest. We eat jam on crackers most days, get roughly 5hrs of sleep per night, and lug our extremely heavy bags through cobbled streets at 1am, trying to find our accommodation (because bus fares are not part of the budget, obviously)."
However, it has helped them find a different side to themselves. She wrote: "There’s nothing quite like swapping million-rand advertising budgets for toilet scrubbing to teach you about humility, life, and the importance of living each day as if it were your last”.
